UK team set for giant Antarctic iceberg expedition

Scientists will set out in the next week to study an Antarctic realm that has been hidden for thousands of years.

A British Antarctic Survey-led team will explore the seabed ecosystem exposed when a giant iceberg broke away from the Antarctic Peninsula in 2017.
The organisation has also released the first video of the berg, which covers almost 6,000 sq km.
Its true scale begins to emerge in a shot filmed from an aircraft flown along its edge.

Urgent mission

An international team will spend three weeks, from February to March, on board the research ship RRS James Clark Ross, navigating ice-infested waters to reach the remote Larsen C ice shelf from which the berg calved.

British Antarctic Survey marine biologist Dr Katrin Linse, who is leading the mission, said that the calving of the iceberg, which has been named A68, provides researchers with "a unique opportunity to study marine life as it responds to a dramatic environmental change".
"It's important we get there quickly before the undersea environment changes as sunlight enters the water and new species begin to colonise," she explained, adding that the mission was "very exciting".
Prof David Vaughan, science director at BAS stressed that it was a treacherous journey but said the team needed to "be bold".
"Larsen C is a long way south and there's lots of sea ice in the area, but this is important science, so we will try our best to get the team where they need to be," he said.
"The calving of A68 offers a new and unprecedented opportunity to establish an interdisciplinary scientific research programme in this climate-sensitive region. Now is the time to address fundamental questions about the sustainability of polar continental shelves under climate change."

Missing ferry's survivors found on raft in Pacific Ocean

Six adults and an unconscious baby were rescued Sunday from a life raft in the Pacific Ocean after drifting for four days in the blazing sun without water.

The survivors had scrambled onto the small wooden dinghy after their ferry sank, authorities said.

While aboard the dinghy, they drifted for more than 110 miles from the nearest major island when they were found, and debris likely from the ferry was floating around the raft, officials said.

The ferry had been carrying at least 50 people while traveling between two islands in the remote nation of Kiribati, said Darryn Webb, New Zealand Defence Force air commodore. It was not yet clear what caused the ferry to sink, authorities said.

The search crew on a military plane had used radar to locate the dinghy while searching for survivors.

The plane dropped supplies to the survivors -- including food, water and a radio -- while a fishing boat had changed its course to pick up the survivors Sunday afternoon.

"Our heart goes out to the baby and to all those remaining of the 50-plus people," he said.

While thankful the life raft was found, Webb said it was also heartbreaking the ferry had sunk and the others were still missing, as there has been no sign of any other survivors.

Questions remain as to why it took Kiribati authorities so long to tell New Zealand officials the ferry was missing.

New Zealand rescuers say they weren't told about the missing boat until Friday, eight days after the ferry had left. Webb said a Kiribati plane had earlier searched for the ferry but didn't have sophisticated radar equipment.

Kiribati is a remote, impoverished nation of 33 atolls that is home to about 108,000 people.

Crust

Pizza is one of the most popular foods in the world and common fast food item in Europe and North America. Many independent or chain restaurants, cafes, and fast food outlets offer pizza. Restaurants or chains specializing in pizza are pizzerias. Pizza delivery is common in some parts of the world.

Pizza is sold fresh or frozen, either whole or in portions.^[6] Various types of ovens are used to cook them and many varieties exist. Several similar dishes are prepared from ingredients commonly used in pizza preparation, such as calzone and stromboli. In the United States, pizza is usually eaten out of handafter dividing into slices from a large pizza or small pizzetta as a whole. In Italy, pizza is eaten with a fork and knife in restaurants, but is also sold to take away and eaten out of hand. Frozen pizza became popular in the late 20th century.

বুলেট গতির শট আছড়ে পড়ে সামনের ইলেকট্রনিক সাইট স্ক্রিনে। ফ্ল্যাট ছক্কা হাঁকিয়ে ব্যাট তুলেই রেখেছিলেন রুবেল। তামিমের শঙ্কা এই ছক্কার গল্প তাদের অসংখ্যবার শুনতে হবে।
“রুবেলের ছক্কাটা দারুণ ছিল। তবে ওর ছক্কার চেয়ে ফলো থ্রু বেশি ভালো লেগেছে। এই ছক্কার গল্প যে কত বছর শুনতে হবে (হাসি)…।”
মিরপুর শের-ই-বাংলা জাতীয় ক্রিকেট স্টেডিয়ামে মঙ্গলবার জিম্বাবুয়েকে ৯১ রানে হারিয়ে ত্রিদেশীয় সিরিজে টানা তৃতীয় জয় তুলে নেয় বাংলাদেশ।

বুধবার ভোলার জেলা প্রশাসক  মো. সেলিম উদ্দিন এ কথা জানান।

তিনি বলেন, দুই দিনে সফরে ২৪ জানুয়ারি সকালে হেলিকপ্টারে ভোলার চরফ্যাশন আসবেন রাষ্ট্রপতি। সেখানে জ্যাকব ওয়াচ টাওয়ার উদ্বোধন শেষে স্থানীয় টিবি হাইস্কুল মাঠে সুধী সমাবেশে যোগ দিবেন তিনি। পরে উপজেলার চর কুকরিমুকরিতে ইকোপার্ক উদ্বোধন ও রাতযাপন করবেন।
জেলা প্রশাসক আরও জানান, বৃহস্পতিবার ভোলা সদরের উপ-শহর বাংলাবাজারে স্বাধীনতা জাদুঘর উদ্বোধন করবেন তিনি। দুপুরে সেখানে আরেকটি সুধী সমাবেশে অংশ নেওয়ার কথা রয়েছে রাষ্ট্রপতির।
এর আগে ১৬ ও ১৭ জানুয়ারি রাষ্ট্রপতি মো. আবদুল হামিদের ভোলায় আসার কথা ছিল। বৈরী আবহাওয়ার কারণে সে সফর স্থগিত করা হয়েছিল।
